FCC AWARDS JUST OVER $400 MILLION TO MINNESOTA COMPANIES TO DEPLOY BROADBAND TO UNSERVED AREAS

The Federal Communications Commission announced December 7, 2020, that Minnesota will be receiving nearly $410 million dollars for broadband deployment to unserved areas through the Rural Development Opportunity Fund Phase I auction.

CONNECTED CARES PILOT PROGRAM

Connected Cares Pilot Program is a new FCC program that awards money to healthcare providers for telehealth initiatives. The program provides coverage of 85% of the eligible costs of broadband connectivity, network equipment, and information services. The application deadline is December 7, 2020.

MINNESOTA’S 2019 BROADBAND GRANT RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

The Minnesota Office of Broadband Development has released its broadband grant recipients for the 2019 cycle. Over $23 million in state funding was awarded to 30 projects across Minnesota to improve broadband speeds and infrastructure.

MPUC APPROVES SETTLEMENT REGARDING FRONTIER’S TELEPHONE SERVICE QUALITY

In October 2019, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission held a hearing regarding a settlement between Frontier Communications and the Minnesota Department of Commerce. The settlement came after the Commission received a large volume of complaints regarding Frontier’s telephone service quality, customer service, and billing practice and after the Department of Commerce investigated Frontier’s alleged violation of Minnesota’s state telecommunications regulatory statutes.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission released its Order approving the settlement with modifications on January 22, 2020. The settlement is now in effect and Frontier must begin reporting its compliance with the service quality metrics set forth in the settlement.
